Master Dale Miller 5th Degree Black Belt and Examiner
I started training in the art of Choi Kwang Do when I was 13 years old. At that time I was a shy, overweight teenager who had no interest in sports or any physical activites. My mother worked with my first instructor and he convinced her to get me into his Martial Art to build my confidence and help me get fitter. My first class I saw all these martial arts students punching and kicking and thought to myself I would never be able to do all these moves. After a few weeks my instructor told me it was time I should buy a martial arts uniform (Dobok) and so I asked my father if he would buy it for me. He told me that he would only buy it if I PROMISED him I wouldnt give up on this martial art and waste his money, like I had when I had tried doing Judo when I was younger. I promised I wouldn't quit until I reached my black belt, which seemed an impossibly long time away and was something I never thought I would achieve.
Almost 20 years later I am still regularly teaching and training in Choi Kwang Do. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. It has kept me fit and healthy over the years and it has done wonders for my confidence. As I progressed through the art and saw the benefits training in the art gave to me I decided that I wanted to share these benefits with others and so I started helping to teach the art to new students and run parts of the class. When my instructor decided to stop teaching, I took over his school and have been running my own schools ever since.
Choi Kwang Do is an incredible art. While other arts are stuck in their traditional ways, Choi Kwang Do is a modern art that is constantly evolving to ensure that students get the best possible training, without the risk of injuries that are a part of other martial arts training. Over the years I have taught hundreds of students of all ages from 5 to 80. I have taught many people up to the black belt and higher levels and several of my students have gone on to become instructors themselves. In all that time my classes have had an amazing safety record. A study by the George Washington university found that in traditional martial arts such as Karate and Tae Kwon Do the average injury rate was 1 injury in every 48 hours. Due to the Choi Kwang Do training methods I have yet to have a single injury to my students other than the occasional bruise. Yet they all learn effective self defence techniques which have helped them to successfully defend themselves on many occasions.
Although I have reached the rank of Master Instructor I am still continually learning and improving in Choi Kwang Do. In order that I am able to give the best tuition to my students I train with the best Choi Kwang Do instructors around the world, attend the latest seminars when possible and occasionally train with the Grandmaster himself.
